Bring Your Favorite Dish! International Potluck Day:Friday, January 27, 2012 @ 11:30
Social Studies-8th
Instructor: Mr. Carrington
Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies (American History)
Students continue their study of American History, begun in seventh grade, by examining the industrial growth in the North, the agricultural changes in the South, and the tensions that developed between the two.  Next, they learn how ideas for improving traditional institutions sparked new social and artistic movements in the early to mid-1800s.  They then move to a survey of the American push to expand the boundaries of the nation westward into boundaries outside the U.S. borders and the tensions that developed with Britain and the war with Mexico.  Students learn about the growing sectional conflict that culminated in secession, the Civil War, and the attempt to rebuild the union during reconstruction.  Later topics include the transformation of the United States into an urban industrial society, the dilemma of race, the changing role of women, World War I, the Depression, World War II, the Cold War, rising global involvement of the United States, the Civil Rights movement, the social and political turmoil of the 1960s, the dual crisis of Vietnam and Watergate, the Reagan revolution, and the issues of the contemporary world.  An in-depth study of our Constitution is included in the course.

Homework Disclaimer
Please be advised that in order to provide early assignment information, I will post assignments and their due dates on SchoolFusion in advance.  However, class pacing may require that I make adjustments to assignments during class.  Therefore, the assignments given in class should always be considered as the appropriate assignments.  For this reason, it is essential for the students to record the class assignments in their student agendas and not rely exclusively on SchoolFusion.
